Companies Collaborate for Massive Planned Massachusetts Offshore Wind Storage Project

Leaders in the U.S. offshore wind market have teamed up with Massachusetts-based storage provider NEC Energy Solutions to accelerate energy storage in Massachusetts and ultimately, develop a 55-MW/110-MWh storage system for offshore wind.

Bay State Wind, a partnership of Orsted and Eversource for developing the 800-MW Bay State Wind offshore wind farm, last week said it entered into a letter of intent to collaborate with NEC to build the storage system for its proposed project.

The companies said that the collaboration includes development of early commercial integration of storage technologies into the electricity supply chain and capitalizing “on storage technology’s benefits to clean energy integration, grid reliability, system wide efficiency, and system peak demand reduction.”

Steve Fludder, CEO of NEC Energy Solutions, said the agreement is “crucial” to growing the company’s storage solutions business globally.

“The Bay State Wind project is a unique opportunity and the benefits to the Commonwealth are immense,” Fludder said.  “We are excited about what we can achieve together."

The proposed Bay State Wind project is located 25 miles off the Massachusetts South Coast and 15 miles off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard.
