A trio of federal regulations is boosting opportunities for advanced batteries and flywheel energy storage technologies to expand a foothold in the nation's electricity grid.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's Order 784, which took effect last month, requires high-voltage interstate transmission operators to recognize the value of energy storage systems that can quickly and precisely dampen potentially dangerous disturbances in electrical frequencies.  This capability boosts storage systems' competitiveness against traditional power generation that can't react as quickly or accurately when the grid faces sudden imbalances.
